A 200 year history

For more than a century, Pratt Street has been home to the finest merchants, offering local goods and services to both residents and visitors alike.

  • 1814

The Descendants of General Court Representative John Pratt deeded the land for Pratt Street to the City of Hartford.

  • Mid 1800's

Pratt Street is a fashionable residential address and plays host to bridge parties and luncheons.

  • Late 1800's

Pratt Street transitions into a bustling commercial center with the addition of the Cook Building, Unity Building, and the Society for Savings Bank.

  • 1900-1959

Five of the twelve remaining historic buildings are constructed by some of Hartford’s most noted architects as Pratt Street establishes itself as Hartford’s premiere shopping district.

  • 1960-1970

Insurance carriers and other office users become the dominant commercial force downtown. Aetna agrees to preserve and maintain Pratt Street’s historic buildings.

  • 1980-1990

The Hartford Downtown Council initiated and installed the humorous, touching, irreverent, and thoughtful inscribed bricks that pave Pratt Street today.

  • 2000-2015

The City of Hartford invests in streetscape improvements and appoints security and maintenance ambassadors. During this time, the Hartford Business Improvement District is established.

  • Present day

Shelbourne and its partners LAZ Investments and Lexington Partners invest in a bold vision to restore and revitalize Pratt Street, Hartford’s oldest contiguous block of historic architecture as a catalytic project for all of Downtown.
