A 200 year history

For more than a century, merchants have plied their trades on Pratt Street, offering local goods and services to downtown and regional residents and visitors.

  • 1814

    Descendants of General Court representative John Pratt (mid-1600’s) deed the land for Pratt St. to the City.

  • Mid 1800's

    Pratt Street is a fashionable residential address, host to bridge parties, and luncheons.

  • Late 1800's

    Pratt Street transitions into a bustling commercial center with the addition of the Cook Building, Unity Building and the Society for Savings Bank.

  • 1900-1959

    Five of the 12 remaining historic buildings are constructed by some of Hartford’s most noted architects as Pratt St. establishes itself as Hartford’s premiere shopping district.

  • 1960-1970

    Insurance carriers and other office users become the dominant commercial force downtown. Aetna agrees to preserve and maintain Pratt Street’s historic buildings.

  • 1980-1990

    The Hartford Downtown Council initiated and installed the humorous, touching, irreverent, and thoughtful inscribed bricks that pave Pratt Street today.

  • 2000-2015

    The City of Hartford invests in streetscape improvements, appoints security and maintenance ambassadors and establishes the Downtown Hartford BID.

  • Present day

    Shelbourne and its partners LAZ Investments and Lexington Partners invest in a bold vision to restore and revitalize Pratt Street, Hartfold’s oldest contiguous block of historic architecture as a catalytic project for all of Downtown.
